Tyler Duffy on yet another way the MLS is screwing its players. Still wondering why every American player who can gets the hell out of MLS? This example should illuminate it. Four MLS clubs (D.C. United, Chivas USA, Houston Dynamo and New England) are currently playing in the SuperLiga, which, depending upon your persuasion, is either an underrated gem or a leprous facsimile of the Champions League. To spice the stakes a bit, organizers added an oft-touted $1 million bonus to the winning team. In Mexico, teams distribute that bonus equally among the players. But, not in MLS! MLS has limited the players’ share of the bonus to 15% of the total, $150,000. If the roster is 22 players, that is a difference of $45,000 vs. $3,000 in bonus money. If this was MLB, who cares?
