He does not miss the opportunity to highlight the grotesque “calculations” of an honor-shame culture and its justification of terror. In doing so he raises the key issue that distinguishes an honor-shame culture and an integrity-guilt culture — not the basic human instinct to avoid shame and get honor, but the response to shame and the means to regain honor.
