Police on Thursday raided companies suspected of involvement in an eel mislabeling scandal, in which imported eels from China were sold as domestic products, law enforcers said. The joint investigation task force of Hyogo and Tokushima prefectural police forces searched the offices of Uohide, an eel importer and seller based in Tokushima, and Shinko Gyorui, a Kobe-based seafood wholesaler, on suspicion of violating the law against unfair competition. Thursday's raid covered a total of 26 locations in seven prefectures in connection with the scandal, and investigators eye accusing those involved of fraud. According to police, Uohide and Shinko Gyorui sold a total of 3.6 tons of mislabeled eels to intermediate wholesalers between April and June.
