Railroad to Use Its New Track Renewal Train to Replace Ties and Rail in One Pass Omaha, Neb., June 30, 2008 – Union Pacific Railroad is spending $6.25 million this year on track improvements in Clinton, Iowa, and will complete the project in half the time using the railroad's track renewal train (TRT) that replaces ties and rail at the same time. When the project is complete, crews will have removed and installed 17,500 concrete ties; spread 25,700 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed; replaced the surfaces at two road crossings; replaced three turnouts that guide a train from one track to another and replaced nearly seven miles of rail.
