Blues can't spend their way out of the cellar

The NHL free-agent marketplace is open for business . . . and the Blues are off to the side, watching other teams chase the handful of exciting players up for grabs. Some fans hoped the Note would bring back defenseman Bryce Salvador, for instance, but he re-signed with the Devils for four years and slightly less than $12 million overall. This Blues can’t possibly bid for the highest-end unrestricted free agents, guys like winger Marian Hossa and offensive defenseman Brian Campbell. Speedy center Brian Rolston would be a nice fit here, but he, too, could move well out of their price range. Blues president John Davidson has more than $9 million in salary cap space with 19 players under contract.
