EU Treaty: Nicolas Sarkozy blames Peter Mandelson for defeat

By James Kirkup and Bruno Waterfield in Brussels Ireland's rejection of the EU treaty has sparked a row between Britain and France after Nicolas Sarkozy blamed Peter Mandelson for alienating voters. Mr Sarkozy made the attack on Mr Mandelson, a former British cabinet minister, as EU leaders gave Ireland four months to find a way around their referendum rejection of the treaty. But David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary immediately rejected the accusations. Mr Miliband said: “I don't think that Peter's turned from being a national figure of blame to an international one is fair.” He claimed President Sarkozy had been in “playful mood”.
