Hasek retires from Detroit Red Wings

Caskey) DETROIT, June 9 (UPI) -- Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek announced Monday he is retiring from the National Hockey league. The 43-year-old Czech product, nicknamed "The Dominator," is throwing in the towel after playing in the NHL for 16 years. Hasek played a total of four seasons over the past seven with the Red Wings, becoming the first European starting goalie to win in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002. Hasek won the Vezina Trophy six times and was voted most valuable player twice. He retired for one season after taking the Stanley Cup in 2002, but stepped back onto the ice with the Wings for the 2003-04 season.
