At times, depending on the availability of funds and political factors, work in progress would take years or even decades to complete. Repairs and maintenance were not a priority even when the potholes were large enough to cause catastrophic accidents. However, the road network and the quality of infrastructure in general are not only an economic lifeline, but also key indicators of the level of economic development a region or country boast. In the developed world, voters rate politicians and parties based on, among other things, new project developments and improvements on existing infrastructure.
