Renamo Rages Against Mayor of Beira

Posted to the web 13 October 2008 Maputo Mozambique's main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, has denounced the mayor of Beira, Daviz Simango, for "violating the ideological principles of Renamo during his term of office". Up until a few weeks ago, there was no praise too great for Simango, and it was widely assumed that Renamo would run Simango for a second term as mayor in the municipal elections scheduled for 19 November. Indeed, as late as 8 August Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama said as much publicy. But on 28 August, Dhlakama performed a volte-face, and suddenly Simango was no longer the candidate. He was replaced by Renamo parliamentarian, Manuel Pereira.
