Lansing State Journal • October 11, 2008 BOSTON - For a few hours on Friday night, Michigan State had the best record in college hockey at 1-0. Playing a late afternoon game in the Ice Breaker Tournament, the No. 11 ranked Spartans got off to a good start as they scored early in the first period, addded two goals in the second and went on to a 3-1 victory over Massachusetts at Boston University's Agganis Arena. Jeff Lerg, MSU's senior goaltender and captain, made 36 saves, and was working on a shutout until sophomore forward Brian Keane scored with 6:04 left in the third period. "Jeff was amazing. He has such a calming impact on our team,'' said Spartan freshman center Daultan Leveille, who assisted on MSU's first two goals.
