Posted: Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 PINEHURST Although the spotlight before play began was on New Zealander Danny Lee, the 18-year-old finished four shots off the pace on the first of two days of stroke play Monday in the U.S. Amateur golf tournament. Another 18-year-old, Wesley Bryan of Chapin, S.C., a freshmen at the University of South Carolina, and Andrew Putnam of the state of Washington, shot 3-under par 67s to take the lead. Bryan's round came on Pinehurst's famed No. 2 course; Putnam's, on the club's No. 4 course. The 312 players in the field play both courses during their two days of stroke play, and the low 64 after the second round advance to match play.
