Teacher Hiring Marred By Tribalism

Posted to the web 13 August 2008 Silas Nthiga Nairobi Tribalism and nepotism have marred the ongoing primary school teacher recruitment in some districts of Eastern Province with applicants being rejected on ethnic grounds. RejectedApplicants from Embu and Meru seeking vacancies in the neighbouring Mbeere, Kitui and Mwingi districts were rejected in favour of locals despite having the required qualifications. Recruitment panels mostly composed of District Education Boards preferred local applicants, whom they argued were better placed to work in their home areas. A group of applicants from Embu who had gone to seek employment in Mbeere and Mwingi complained of being sidelined in favour of locals.
