Newstin is a unique, semantic and cross-language information retrieval engine with metadata tagging and data visualization capabilities. Newstin organizes YOUR online world; classifying hundreds of thousands of news articles and blogs into searchable topics and categories across multiple foreign languages, retrievable on YOUR terms.
How is Newstin different? You can search/browse/read news by topics and not just by keywords. While browsing through the topic structure you can switch languages and have foreign-language articles translated in real time. Recently added you can use this same approach for comments and editorial discussions based on the Newstin categories. Now, not only can you read news stories from foreign publications but you can also read comments written in foreign languages.
What is the benefit of organizing news into topics? You can track news of your interest much more efficiently. For instance the Information Technologies topic page will give you relevant news from the entire IT industry, be it on software, hardware, internet, intranet, spam, etc. and not just stories with the phrase "information technologies" in them, which is the case with a traditional search engine. Because the most important stories are always at the top of the list, you will know what is happening with a mere glance.
How do I personalize Newstin?Use "+ My Newstin" button to create a shortcut to your favorite topics or search queries in My Newstin bar. Example: Go to the Education topic page and then click on the "+ My Newstin" button / Perform a search query and hit "+ My Newstin" button.
Can I save a search query?Yes, you can save a search by hitting "+ My Newstin" button.
What is the difference between country editions of the same language, i.e. the US and UK editions? Two things: articles are ranked based on the publisher location. This means that articles published in UK sources will usually be ranked first in the UK edition. Secondly, topics specific to the UK reader will be prioritized in some navigation elements (e.g. UK Government vs. US government).
I cannot find a news category of my interest. Is there any way of adding it?As an immediate solution you could of course use the search service to get the news results you need. As the next step we will be happy if you about that category and we could either develop it or help you find the location.
How many topics are there at Newstin.com?Currently we maintain approximately 650 thousand topics across all languages.
What does "Source location" stand for in the advanced search? It is the country of origin of the news source (independent of language). For instance if you want to search for "Iraq" in UK sources only, you would select "United Kingdom" and search for the keyword “Iraq”.
Does Newstin offer news feeds?Yes, we offer a feed for every topic page which you can use for your reader or integrate into your website/blog. Go to our Tools page to select a feed or HTML code of your choice.
What are the benefits of the Cross-language Topic Structure? You can track news on any of the thousands of topics across multiple languages. For example, you can read news on Agriculture in English and switch to German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian etc. for what has been published in these languages on Agriculture, then with our “on the fly” translator have these stories translated into content you can use.
How to find a topic? There are two ways. A) With any search you perform, Newstin will suggest the most relevant topical categories to you. B) Click on the NewstinMap Flash application in the upper right corner. This will open the NewstinMap where you can browse through the topic structure or find a topic by its name.
What languages are currently supported by Newstin?English (US & UK), German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Russian, Arabic, Chinese (simplified)
Why do Chinese characters display incorrectly in my browser?Installing the East Asian language support in your operation system should resolve any issues you are having.

What happens with the information that is filled into the "Send to a friend" form (email addresses, name and message)? The provided information is used solely for the purpose of delivering a link to an article or to a Newstin category page to the requested email address. Newstin does not collect nor store any of this information, and does not sell nor provide the information to third parties.
How far back does the archive go?Newstin is a current awareness service and we currently archive articles for up to 6 months.
What is sentiment analysis and how does it appear on our site?Sentiment analysis is our tool to show you the tone of the article. Does the article or overall category have a positive, negative or neutral feel to it. For example; an article of an incident where oil is spilled out to sea would most likely have negative wording due to the effects that would follow the incident. Our sentiment analysis meter will show you without reading the article whether or not that article is written positively or negatively based on a color scheme of red, green or grey. Red represents negative tone, green positive and grey is for neutral tone.
I can’t find a source, can I add sources? We provide a feature that will allow you to add sources to our system. Before you add a source make sure that we do not already have this source by searching for it within our advanced searching features http://www.newstin.com/advanced-search.a - type in your desired source within the source box (i.e. cnn.com). If we do not have your source then you can go to our "Add RSS Feed" link in the Settings page of your account and using the RSS feed from your source add it to our system. Please note that your source must have RSS or ATOM technology in order for it to be added to the Newstin system.
Do I need to have a profile to use Newstin social features? To comment on stories or discussion groups you do NOT have to be registered or have a profile. To start a discussion group as an editor within one of our categories we do ask that you set up a user profile so that you can maintain the forum.
What is the difference between commenting and discussions? We differentiate between our commenting feature and our discussion feature. Commenting is related to a news story or putting your “two cents” in on a discussion forum that is taking place within a particular category. Our discussion feature has two parts, the first part is the editor and founder of the discussion within a topic. This person is responsible for initiating the conversation and maintaining it as little or as much as he/she would like. After a discussion has been started anyone who comes to the category is welcome to comment within the parameters of the discussion.
