ISN'T it somewhat ironic that just a couple of days after it was identified that Rugby, dubbed the scooter capital of Britain, has a serious problem with invalid scooters zooming up to 8mph around shopping precincts with little regard for pedestrians, that someone should write about young people zooming around Victoria Square on bicycles in much the same manner? (May 17).
With evidence on film that the elderly, frail and disabled can be just as inconsiderate as the young, and with all ages zooming around in or on motor vehicles with even less regard for safety, Britain is clearly suffering from a serious lack of respect.
In countries like Holland, Belgium and Germany, the bicycle is a popular mode of transport, In addition, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers seem to get along just fine.
The vast majority of people abroad appear to know their place and the rules, and show respect to one another.
In shopping areas where motor vehicles are banned, pedestrians and cyclists are both welcome.
So what must we do to enjoy the same? Teach the youngsters or teach the elderly? Punish the youngsters or punish the elderly?
