On May 19, some of the injured in Sichuan quake-hit areas were transferred to Chongqing to receive medical treatment. The Ministry of Health issued an urgent notice asking four provinces and cities neighboring Sichuan, including Chongqing, to accept and treat the injured who come from disaster areas; relieve the pressure on medical treatment in Sichuan province; improve treatment; and reduce disability and death rates.
The Ministry of Health required that beds for the injured should be immediately reserved in Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan and Shaanxi; and that these areas prepare to receive the injured. Chongqing should prepare 5,000 beds, and Guizhou, Yunnan and Shaanxi should reserve 1,000 beds first. Reserved beds will be mainly provided by first rate hospitals, and second rate hospitals will provide any additional beds. The severely injured should be first transferred to first rate hospitals. The Ministry also required that specialized leadership agencies be set up to receive and treat the injured; make careful arrangements, scientific control, and overall arrangements; and ensure the orderly and effective reception and treatment of the injured. A professional medical team will be organized to guide medical treatment and help to resolve issues. Medical personnel who demonstrate high medical ethics, superior medical skills, a strong sense of responsibility and dedication will be asked to provide medical treatment.
