We've spotted what appears to be the first sales of Intel's new wonder-chip, and no it's not in an Eee PC.
UK online retailer Tranquil PC appears to be the first reseller in the world to offer an Intel Atom-powered mobo, and they're even giving a ten quid discount on the RRP of £62.90 (AUS$128) plus tax.
The company reckons it'll be shipping the boards in the first week of June on a first-come-first-served basis.
The mini-itx boards, which are easily capable of running Vista Home Media Centre, feature the Atom 230 CPU clocked at 1.62 GHz, have 512k of L2 cache and are supported by the 945GC + ICH7 chipset.
10/100 Lan connectivity, PCI, an SATA2 HDD interface and high def audio all come as standard.
We called the folks at Manchester-based Tranquil to find out how they'd managed to beat the rest of the world to the chase, and to ascertain stock levels, but as yet no-one has returned our call. When we know... so will you.
Update:
Tranquil top man David Thompson has just been on the phone and has told us that he is expecting large deliveries next Tuesday and Wednesday. As Tranquil is principally an OEM, the majority of the boards will be getting a new home inside the company's own home server range.
Which all means that, as the company buys the chips by the shedload, and builds the boards itself, there will be plenty of extra production for those of you wanting to get your mucky hands on an Atomised mobo.
