American number one Andy Roddick has pulled out of the French Open after failing to shake off a shoulder injury.

The 25-year-old, ranked sixth in the world, sustained the injury early in his semi-final against Stanislas Wawrinka at the Rome Masters on May 10.

He skipped the Hamburg Masters last week but was expected to take part in the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf.

However, his brother John announced on Monday that Andy would miss the German event as well as the second major of the season, which is due to start this Sunday at Roland Garros.

Roddick’s best showing at the French Open came in 2001 when he reached the third round.
