I prefer buying individual stock based on fundamentals, but I'll bet on anything in the short term (bull or bear) if there's sound reasoning behind it.
I don't retire for 40 years, so I can afford to take on a lot of risk. Don't do what I do if you're over 50.

Higher than expected retirement. Often companies "eliminate jobs" by offering severance packages and pushing people to early retirement.
We should host an FDR vs. Peter Schiff inflation/deflation debate. Peter is screaming about impending hyperinflation at the top of his lungs these days.
Sudden unexpected drops in mutual funds could be due to dividends or repricing of shares (you have more shares of the fund but at lower value).
Back in high school I saw this happen to one of my funds, so I called my broker, and HE didn't even know why. Eventually I figured it out... and dumped the broker.
Doesn't Kohl's do discount clothes? I would have expected people to "trade down" to there if they were short on cash.
