George S. S. Snyder [Cumberland]

George Sylvester Scott Snyder, 92, of 416 N. Mechanic St., Cumberland, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2008, at Lions Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

George was born on May 31, 1915, in Corriganville, the son of the late Charles F. Snyder and Elmyra S. (Martz) Snyder. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Mary B. (Spriggs) Snyder, and their daughter Ruth Lees; and his second wife, Carolina June Snyder; two brothers, Earl Albert Snyder and Harry Snyder, and three sisters, May Louise Robey, Mary Catherine Patterson, and Eleanor Smith.

He is survived by his daughter, Jane C. Trail, with whom he resided for the past three years; his grandchildren, Linda Anderson and her husband Kenny, of Cumberland, Sharon Fatzie and her husband Donald, of Ijamsville, Brian Lees, of Germantown, Donna Trail, of Adamstown, and Douglas Trail, of Baltimore; and one great-grandson, David Bryan Anderson and his wife Renee, of Cumberland; son-in-law, George Lees, and nephew, Johnny Spriggs.

George started to work at Celanese in 1933 and retired after 45 years of service.

He was drafted into the Army February 1945 with a brief tour in Japan. He was a heavy-duty truck driver and company clerk and trained at Fort Meade. George was honorably discharged with a Buck Sergeant rank; received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon World War II and Army of Occupation Medal (Japan).

George was a ham operator and received his license for amateur radio on 8-11-1952. His call numbers were W3UAC, he communicated worldwide and provided emergency phone net to the Red Cross when a tornado passed through this area in 1958. George liked to fish and hunt, and was very proud of the first eight point he shot, He had it mounted and kept it all these years and it still looks pretty good. He also went frog hunting. He liked country music and played in a band for a while. He could play the banjo, violin/fiddle, mandolin, and regular and Spanish guitar.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Tom Landaker officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Honor Guard.
