Ricco wins Giro stage, Visconti keeps overall lead

TIVOLI, Italy: Riccardo Ricco won the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia by breaking away from a group of about 40 riders in the last 100 meters, and Giovanni Visconti kept the overall lead for a third day.

Ricco, who rides for Saunier Duval, finished in 4 hours, 41 minutes, 5 seconds for his second stage victory since the start of the Giro. Paolo Bettini was second in the same time, followed by Davide Rebellin.

Visconti held on to the leader's pink jersey and has an overall time of 36:44:06. Matthias Russ is 9 seconds back in second place, while defending champion Danilo Di Luca is 7 1/2 minutes behind.

The stage win earned Ricco a 20-second bonus and moved him to within 6 seconds of Di Luca, who is fourth in the overall standings.

The Giro continues Sunday with a mostly flat 135-mile leg from Civitavecchia to San Vincenzo.
