She is popularly called Flying Chick because of her car-racing techniques. The Uspa Sports Personality for the month of April is a mother, actress and musician. She revealed to Veronica Kagona how she has been able to penetrate a 'man's' sport.
Tell us about your life behind the wheel of a race car
Every thing goes on as normal. First of all, I enjoy what I do with out getting tense. This makes me victorious in all my rallies.
Did your husband have anything to do with your involvement in the sport?
Yes. I had it in my dreams and mind because whenever I would see him excel, I could tell myself that I can also race like him. And through his support, I was able to achieve the long awaited dream.
Do you think there is a future for women in motor sports?
Yes and a great future indeed. I'm sure we can take over the male supremacy in the game. For instance, in a long time men had dominated the game but lately women are showing interest in the game with even greater wins. All we should have is courage and the rest will follow.
Are you scared when on track?
Before the rally, I'm tense. I get abdominal pain. But when I get control of the steering wheel, the fear disappears and all I'm determined to do is to drive and win.
What should a woman know to survive on a race track?
First and foremost one has to be flexible. Make sure you exercise on a daily basis as well as get assistance from experienced rally drivers. These will give you hints on how they have been able to excel. Lastly one has to settle down. Avoid thinking about your family. You know we mothers think a lot about our children, worrying how they will survive without us. Such thoughts can ruin you.
With two months experience of rally driving, how do you break ground in the male domain?
At least I'm very free with the men. They don't despise me at all. Some at the moment regard me as their fellow man because of my rallying techniques. Some even seek advice from me which is quite encouraging.
What are some of the challenges you are facing?
My greatest challenge is driving with men and women who have more years of rallying experience yet I'm now two months into the sport. Another big challenge is funding. Currently I have no sponsor yet cars and their problems are very taxing.
How do you balance racing, acting, music and motherhood?
That's not a problem if you plan your time properly. For instance when driving, I put every thing behind. I even forget about my children and only remember them when I'm out of the race. However, I'm happy that with all the taxing responsibilities, as a mother I have been able to perform to the best of my family's happiness.
How do you rate women of today?
Today's women are brave and determined. I think I should call them go- getters because there is nothing which can stand in their when they want to attain something. Look at every sector be it in sports, medicine, academics, and positions of leadership, we are every where which is very promising for the women.
What advise would you give to your fellow women in order to improve their stand in society?
They should not despise them selves. For example they should have that saying that "what a man can do, a woman can do".
Also stand out and fight for your rights since we have showed the men that we can make it in every field, then why not move higher?
Who inspires you?
My husband and Dorcus Inzikuru. I feel I can excel like them and I can be capable of winning the overall Uspa award like how Inzikuru did.
Do you have any beauty secrets?
I only wear a brown foundation on my face and like wearing jeans and free tops.
What can't you do with out?
|
My rosary and family. And for the rosary even if I forget it at home I will always buy another one.
