Anna Chakvetadze in action at Rome. HAMBURG: Defending champion Roger Federer and rising star Novak Djokovic are safely through to the semifinals of the Hamburg Masters Series after both enjoyed straight-set wins here on Friday. Australian Open winner Djokovic was always in control against Spain’s Albert Montanes as he sealed a 6-2, 6-3 win in 77 minutes. And world No. 1 Federer also looked comfortable as he beat Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3 in 80 minutes.
Federer has won four of the last six tournaments in Hamburg. Paes-Robredo pair in last fourIn doubles action, Leander Paes and his Spanish partner Tommy Robredo notched up a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Ivan Ljubicic and Robin Soderling to storm into the last four. The unseeded Indo-Spanish pair will next meet the second-seeded duo of Canadian Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia. Meanwhile in Rome, Russian sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze beat Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to go through to the semifinals of Rome International. Chakvetadze had an easy time in the first set against the 64th ranked player, who had stunned Serbian top seed Ana Ivanovic in the second round on Wednesday. Chakvetadze will next meet Alize Cornet after the French qualifier got a walkover from World No. six Serena Williams, who hurt her back while training.
