Harare

THE Zimbabwe HIV and Aids Activist Union is proposing the formation of an anti-retroviral drug committee responsible for monitoring the distribution and dispensation of drugs to HIV and Aids patients.

This comes in the wake of revelations that drugs meant for public hospitals ended up being sold in private pharmacies and on the illegal market.

The idea was mooted during a tour by the organisation of Varichem Pharmaceuticals last week where concerns were raised over the availability of the drugs in public institutions.

ZHAAU president Mr Bernard Nyathi said it was necessary to delegate some responsibilities on anti-retroviral drug distribution and dispensation to eliminate mistrust and the possibilities of corruption.

"We are calling for the delegation of a committee that will be responsible for monitoring the distribution of anti-retroviral drugs in the country so that these drugs will not end up in the hands of unscrupulous people who are reselling to private pharmacies or illegal markets, " he explained.

Mr Nyathi advocated for an increased participation of HIV and Aids patients and all stakeholders in the fight against the pandemic.

"People suffering from HIV and Aids should be included in the committee for the sake of transparency. They should also be included in committees that deal with matters to do with their lives and welfare. The committee is also open to all the stakeholders in the fight against the pandemic," he said.

To curb the abuse of these drugs, Varichem pharmaceutical is now labelling drug containers with donors' corporate image so that they can easily be identified if sold on the streets.

Varichem has received some help from Central Government towards production of ARVs.
