Nearly 19 billion tons of coal reserves found in Xinjiang in 2007

Statistics show that a total of 18.98 billion tons of coal reserves were discovered in Xinjiang in 2007, consolidating the province's position as a strategic energy base. The construction of the railway between Urumqi and the Zhundong coal field was kicked off in November 2007, in a move to develop the abundant coal resources in the area. The annual production of coal in Xinjiang is around 50 million tons now, and is expected to reach one billion tons by 2020.
