Carey Gingo Kalungi lifted his first men's singles title when he defeated Henry Banura 6-3, 6-2 in the Makerere University Guest House tournament on Sunday evening.

Kalungi though had to dig deep, winning in four sets. He had an easy ride in the first two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-2 respectively but Banura recovered to snatch the third 7-5.

Banura looked like he was going to push it to a decisive set but Kalungi held his nerve to record a slim 7-5 victory in the fourth. Kalungi had struggled to see-off Bruno Ouma in the semifinals before winning 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 while Banura edged past Dean Kibirige 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Michael Kalisa retired trailing the second set 1-5 after losing the first 6-0 to give Kalungi an easy passage to the penultimate stage. In the other quarterfinal encounters, seed 2 Dean Kibirige eased past Brian Kitonsa in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, Henry Banura outsmarted Martin Turyamureeba 6-0, 6-3 while Kevin Ouma was too strong for Kevin Mugenyi, 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, the Makerere men's Tennis Amateur Championship gets underway today at the university campus. The four-day event has already attracted over 11 entrants with games set to be played on a round robin basis.
