Finally, Sergio

Birdies and bogeys from the week in golf.

Birdie: Sergio Garcia. There are times when you forget that he's only 28. But even he says, "I feel like an old man."

All the disappointments have a way of aging a person. And a balky putter also isn't good for your health.

But Garcia finally pulled it together Sunday to win the Players Championship, his biggest victory to date. It isn't a major, but it is pretty darn close.

Garcia came through in the clutch on 18 to make that key par-saving putt. Will it be the putt that launches him to bigger and better things? Perhaps. Remember, he's only 28.

Birdie: Paul Goydos. Too bad he had to lose, but Goydos won a lot of fans with his relaxed approach. He made it look fun, not agonizing. There's a lesson to be learned there.

Birdie: Jeff Quinney. Made a strong run. You'll see his name up there again.

Bogey: Phil Mickelson. He had a chance, entering Sunday in a tie for fourth. But he let it slip away with a 78.

Bogey: Kenny Perry. With all the focus on his playing partner, Goydos, Perry probably wished he could have disappeared. No such luck, as he suffered through an 81.

Birdie: Ernie Els. Showed some positive signs with a tie for sixth.

Bogey: Vijay Singh. So much for my pre-tournament pick. Singh missed the cut.

Bogey: Steve Stricker. Missed the cut for the fifth time in his last six tournaments.

Bogey: Jesper Parnevik. After shooting an 85, Parnevik probably is trying to figure out when was the last time he posted such a high score.

Birdie: Annika Sorenstam. Guess she still has some golf left in her. She posted her third win in eight starts with her title at Kingsmill.

Birdie: Colt Knost. Remember the U.S. Public Links and Amateur champion who decided to skip the Masters to turn pro? Well, he won the Fort Smith Classic on the Nationwide Tour. That should quiet some of his critics.

How about...

Bogey: The wind. Made an already challenging course into a complete fustration, and replaced a much more dramatic display with guys basically not trying to crash

Birdie: The grounds crew at Sawgrass. It would have been real easy to go the Shinnecock route and have nothing holding on the greens, but by careful management the greens were still fast but not a car hood.

I don't care if it's a major or not, The Players is the best thing to watch. My girlfriend who had never watched 5 minutes of golf before, was completely hooked for over two hours on Sunday.

How about a bogey for Bob Costas' barber? Who is coloring and cutting that mans hair? Hilarious....

About the author

I always said if the over-the-top move led to the ideal golf swing, they would be writing about me on the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, I've never shed that killer fault, so I am a golf writer instead. I've played poorly since the age of 12, but I still love the game--most of the time, at least. I learned to play at Chick Evans Golf Course. After attending the University of Illinois, I joined the Tribune in 1981.

I've covered a variety of sports at the Tribune, ranging from high school girls volleyball to the White Sox to covering the Bears run to the Super Bowl in 1985. I took over the golf beat in 1997. Thinking I could establish my credentials right away, I explained why Tiger Woods wouldn't win the Masters in his first major as a pro. One epic title later, I wrote, "Tiger won't tame Augusta" was the worst headline in the Tribune since "Dewey defeats Truman."

Thankfully, things improved since my first tournament. I have seen many memorable moments at majors and Ryder Cups. Woods makes it a great ride. I have an inside the ropes look at his run to history. My wife, Ilene, puts up with my obsessive passion for golf and the White Sox. I've already introduced the game to my sons, Matthew and Sammy. Hopefully, they'll forgive me.
