Heavy Winds, Rain Batter The Region
PHILADELPHIA (CBS3/AP) ―
Commuters faced a one-two punch as wind gusts of nearly 50 miles per hour downed trees and power lines throughout the region on Monday.
Heavy rain caused some minor flooding on highways.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for most of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Several trees and utility poles were brought down by strong winds in Philadelphia throughout the morning hours.
In the East Falls section of the city, a 43-year-old man suffered shoulder injuries after being struck by a falling tree on the 1900 block of Ridge.
Numerous cars were damaged by the falling debris. A light pole reportedly toppled onto a car on the 1400 block of Hunting Park while trees fell onto vehicles near 32nd and Cecil B. Moore and the 6100 block of N. 6th Street.
Delmarva Power and Light reported nearly 13,900 homes and businesses without power statewide during the height of the storm.
Students at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington got an extra day added to their weekend as classes were canceled due to power outages in the city.
The National Guard was called to coastal communities in Kent County after flash floods swamped many area roads.
In Cape May County, West Wildwood declared a state of emergency due to flooding, but did not insist that residents evacuate.
Atlantic City Electric reported that nearly 33,000 customers were without power as of 10:30 a.m. Monday, most of them in Atlantic, Cape May and Salem counties.
An additional 1,000 people were without power in Monmouth and Ocean counties as of mid-morning.
