Deputy secretary of state in China for talks

BEIJING: Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte is in Beijing for discussions expected to focus on the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs and the crisis in Myanmar after the deadly cyclone there.

The State Department says Negroponte will hold talks "on a broad range of bilateral, regional, and global issues."

Negroponte is to meet Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Vice President Xi Jinping, and state councilor Dai Bingguo on Monday.

On Sunday, he met the deputy chief of the People's Liberation Army staff, Ma Xiaotian. No details were released of the talks.

Negroponte earlier visited South Korea and Japan, where he discussed the situation in Myanmar, where Cyclone Nargis killed nearly 29,000 people and left more than 33,000 missing.
