Olympic torch Chinese climbing team on Everest
After two weeks of weather delays, a 19-climber team from China summited the world’s highest peak yesterday (May 7) with their special high-altitude torch, marking the apex of a controversial 85,000-mile relay for the symbolic flame. The Nepalese government quickly lifted its ban on climbing Everest, a ban that included soldiers ordered to shoot anyone seen climbing the mighty peak. An unnamed doctor near Everest is predicting a catastrophe as hundreds of unacclimatized climbers from 32 teams lay siege to the big hill now that Nepal has lifted its climbing ban.
