Chan got by Paul Parmentier 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 on the opening day of the France Open tuneup. She draws top-ranked Justine Henin, who is looking for her fourth German Open title since 2002.

Henin and other top seeds were given first-round byes.

All of the seeded players who did play Monday advanced except 14th-seeded Shahar Peer, who was dumped 7-5, 6-1 by wild-card entrant Sabine Lisicki.

No. 10-seeded Agnes Szavay and 11th-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska both advanced with their opponents retired in the second set. No. 13-seeded Dinara Safina swept Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4; 15th-seeded Alona Bondarenko survived over Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9); and 16th-seeded Nadia Petrova, who won the tournament two years ago, slipped past Katarina Srebotnik 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

Also Monday, Francesca Schiavone got past Alize Cornet 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, Lucie Safarova stopped Virginie Razzano 6-4, 7-5 and Sybille Bammer blitzed Michaella Krajicek 6-1, 6-1. Additional first-round wins came for Kaia Kanepi, Angelika Bachmann, Caroline Wozniacki and Kateryna Bondarenko.

The tournament champion, to be decided Sunday, will collect $196,900.
