THE Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has lined up a number of activities to mark the World Press Freedom Day which will be held on Saturday 3 May.

ZUJ spokesperson Tapfuma Machakaire said the celebrations will be held in provincial centres such as Gweru, Mutare, Masvingo, Chinhoyi and Bulawayo.

In Harare a quill speak will be held on Saturday evening at the national press club where speakers from the country's two major political parties, Zanu PF and MDC-Tsvangirai will address journalists.

"In Mutare, Masvingo and Gweru the commemorations will kick off with procession marches before journalists are addressed by various prominent speakers. We are urging all journalists to attend the functions in their respective provinces.

"This is the day when journalists have the opportunity to discuss issues and demand decent working conditions, especially at a time when the nation is facing a serious economic crisis and a controversial election process," said Machakaire.

Meanwhile, ZUJ will be holding a workshop on election reporting in Bulawayo next week which will focus on the anticipated run off between two presidential candidates Morgan Tsvangirai of MDC and President Robert Mugabe of Zanu PF.

The meeting will be the last in a series of election reporting workshops which have been organized by the union with the other two workshops having been held in Kadoma in the Midlands and in Mutare.

The Bulawayo workshop will also focus on the possibility of a unity government and how suitable it will be for the nation given the nation's political background.
