Mathieu, Safin advance at BMW Open

MUNICH, Germany: Top-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu cruised into the third round of the BMW Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win Wednesday over qualifier Gianluca Naso.

Marat Safin defeated Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to reach the second round. The 84th-ranked Safin, whose match was delayed Tuesday because of rain, got a wild-card entry for the clay-court tournament.

Tommy Haas withdrew with a painful right shoulder. Haas said he would skip the upcoming tournaments in Hamburg and Rome.

Also Wednesday, eight-seeded Marin Cilic stopped Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 7-6 (7) and Lee Hyung-taik downed qualifier Julio Silva 6-1, 6-4. Sixth-seeded Andreas Seppi lost to Simone Bolleli 6-4, 7-5.

In other matches, seventh-seeded Steve Darcis topped Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4, Michael Berrer ousted Haas's replacement Ivo Klec 6-1, 7-6 (6) and Younes El Aynaoui defeated Alexandre Sidorenko 6-4, 7-6 (6).
