Rustenburg mines have been urged to reduce their electricity consumption by at least 10 percent to reduce the load on the country's power grid.

The Minister of Public Enterprise Alec Erwin was addressing the employers and employees of mines around Rustenburg on Thursday as part of government's Imbizo Week.

"Our country is has a huge challenge of load shedding and it is crucial that we at least conserve 10 percent of the electricity.

"We must be aware that if we don't save electricity, South Africa is going to experience much bigger problems," Mr Erwin said.

The Bojanala Platinum District Municipality is among the top ten users of electricity in the country due to the high number of mines found in the Rustenburg area.

The minister said interacting with the staff and employers of the mines had a positive impact on the campaign to conserve power.

"After the discussions that we had with employers and employers of mines in this area, we expect to see a decrease in electricity usage.

"We also hope that the people who are gathered here will preach this message of saving 10 percent to their respective communities," the minister said.

The President of the National Union of Mineworkers, (NUM) Senzeni Zokwana said their union will encourage its members to take part in the programme of conserving 10 percent of electricity.

The intervention by government on the issue of load shedding has brought a lot of relieve in our members.

"They will not hesitate to participate in the campaigns to conserve electricity because they have seen the negative impact of load shedding in our mines," Mr Zokwana said.

The Executive Major of Bojanala District Municipality Ramond Motsepe said his municipality was to launch an energy saving awareness campaign targeting the residential consumers and business sector.

"We have seen it as important to confront the energy challenge facing us."

"We must take these messages of conserving energy to our families, friends, neighbours and colleagues in so doing we will make our country free of electricity disruptions and thereby minimise the impact of mining industry job losses," he said.

Mr Motsepe encouraged mining houses in the district to take part in their campaign to conserve electricity.
